Tough at the top
Article Abstract:
Independent television production companies in the UK saw mixed fortunes in 1996. Their share of the weekly Top 40 programme listings compiled by Barb rose to 24%, from 18% in 1995. However, performance in different categories varied considerably. ITV had no independently produced situation comedy in a Top 40 listing, for example, and independent production companies hardly featured at all in factually based programming. The leading independent, Thames Television, dominates the sector, and this makes it difficult to produce a balanced assessment.

Article Abstract:
Post-production companies are struggling to survive in an increasingly competitive market. These companies are being forced to adopt HD technology, for which they do not have adequate funds. At the other end, they have no choice but to bring down the prices of their services, in view of availability of cheaper options like desktop editing.
