Transforming Hungarian broadcasting: struggles for independent media
Article Abstract:
The liberalization of radio and television during the first half of the 1990s in Hungary took place more slowly than in other Central and Eastern European countries. Hungary now has three distinct national television stations, but public television is in chaos. There is an open media market, but no liberalized system of media regulation. The political will and the level of consensus required to create the basis for the institutional independence of the Hungarian media are not present.

Transforming television in India
Article Abstract:
Until 1991, the state-controlled Doordarshan network dominated television broadcasting throughout India. Economic reforms implemented in 1991 allowed privately-held Star TV of Hong Kong to broadcast old US television programs to India. This led to a revolution in Indian broadcasting and today the country has 13 satellite and cable television channels. Television and radio are particularly effective in reaching India's large illiterate population.

Rushing to judgment: in television, first impressions are the only impressions
Article Abstract:
ABC News White House correspondent Ann Compton believes that fairness has been sacrificed in the rush to publish or broadcast stories. She cites Newsweek's exclusive story on the Monica Lewinsky case which was leaked by other sources even before it was published. She also says the time constraints are another deterrent to fairness, especially for television broadcasters who must condense stories into two minutes of reporting.
