Utilizing volunteers on fisheries projects: benefits, challenges, and management techniques
Article Abstract:
An attempt is made to investigate the predation impacts of nonnative fishes in the Verde River, Arizona utilizing 253 volunteers on a research project. A diverse group of volunteers were exposed to conservation issues, helping deflate misconceptions about conservation and agency roles, developing a network of expertise and completing a research project instrumental in determining future management of native fisheries in Arizona.

A review of Gulf of Mexico marine protected areas: successes, failures, and lessons learned
Article Abstract:
Concerns of commercial and recreational fishers in the Gulf of Mexico over the numerous fishery regulations and closed areas are highlighted. Recommendations are made which include creation of well-designed closed areas that would allow scientists to make accurate assessments, and thereby enabling provision of free areas for fishing while protecting the endangered species.
