The recent purchase by UK media group Pearson of international production and distribution concern Grundy Worldwide has fuelled the battle for global domination of the media market. The move has brought direct comparisons between Pearson TV chief executive Greg Dyke, who has gained a reputation for being ambitious and dynamic, and Richard Dunn, new executive director of News International Television (NITV), who was until recently managing director of Pearson TV.

A number of new media deals were arranged at the recent MIP-TV market. There was particular emphasis on latest information technology, with Yorkshire Tyne Tees International (Y-TTI), for example, announcing that its programme catalogue is now available on CD-ROM and on the Internet. There was a clear shift in the way programme sales are being packaged, with deals now including multimedia rights to programmes.
