Thinking smart: better ships and smaller crews
Article Abstract:
The US Navy's SmartShip program was launched to identify the most promising labor-saving technologies. Less number of crews not only saves the US Navy money but also frees up valuable deck and ship space that can be fitted with combat systems and sensors. So far, the program has determined that as much as 15% of current crew size is dispensable. The program has also identified a number of commercial-off-the-shelf technologies to replace that amount of labor.
