The production line for C-17 has increased considerably, as it has played a vital role in operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and helped in establishing and supporting the first major US ground base in Afghanistan. Its usage has both led to the improvements to the aircraft and to the change in the military environment, with its increased emphasis on strategic and tactical mobility becoming a better-specified and better-designed aircraft.

US heavy-lift aircraft will stretch state of the art

Article Abstract:

The US Marine Corps (USMC) is looking for an urgent improvement in the performance of its heavy-lift helicopters for which it has selected Sikorsky to produce an aircraft that draws components and technologies from an existing design. The new helicopter is designed to carry a 12,300 kg payload externally over a distance of 200 km from a land base or ship to a landing zone at a terrain height of 3,000 ft at 33 degree centigrade.
