Charles de Gaulle prepares to cast its lines
Article Abstract:
The new $3-billion Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier of the Navy of France is set to undergo 15-month sea tests, which will be conducted off France's west coast in the Iroise region. The 40,600-tonne nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is scheduled in the latter part of 1999 for commissioning by the French Navy. While the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier suffered from financial overruns and numerous delays, it is reflective of a major advancement for the field of French engineering. The new aircraft carrier will also provide a major boost to the Navy of France's capabilities for air missions as a result of its capacity for deploying the E-2C Hawkeye and the Rafale M.

Charles de Gaulle propeller problem
Article Abstract:
Charles de Gaulle's maintenance schedule has been brought forward after an embarrassing incident during warm-weather trials. A blade on one of France's showpiece nuclear-powered aircraft carrier's two propellers broke off as the 40,550-ton full-load displacement vessel sailed from Guadeloupe to Norfolk, VA. The maintenance period scheduled for Jan to Mar 2001, has been advanced to take account of the unexpected problem.
