Chile suspends fighter programme
Article Abstract:
Chilean military officials have frozen the fighter procurement program of the Chilean Air Force (ChAF), owing to financial difficulties. ChAF had planned to announce its final decision on the selection process in mid-1998, but a budget cut of about $200 million forced officials to indefinitely postpone the program. ChAF wanted to buy 16 to 24 modern multi-role fighter as a first batch of an eventual buy of up to 80 aircraft. The new fighters will replace the existing first line of MIRAGE 5, T-36s and F-5s.
