Homing alone - the autonomous projectile
Article Abstract:
Artillery projectiles that can navigate and find their targets are being developed. One such projectile is the Bofors 155mm Trajectory Correctable Munition (TCM). The TCM uses Global Positioning System to home in on the precise location of its target. It is capable of trajectory corrections for both range and azimuth. Another course correction munition called the Smart Trajectory Artillery Round is being developed by a group composed of Thomson-Thorn Missile Electronics, Rockwell Collins, Royal Ordnance and the British Defence Evaluation and Research Agency.

Fuzes: perfection to be destroyed
Article Abstract:
Considerable advances in the development of projectile fuzes are being achieved. The improvements are to make fuzes more versatile, accurate, reliable, safer and economic to use and manufacture. Advances in fuze technology has been achieved through solid state micro-electronics. A prime example of an advanced electronic fuze was the Proximity Fuzed High Explosive (PFHE) round developed by Philips Electronikindustrier and Bofors. The PFHE improved the effectiveness of the Bofors air defense gun against aircraft and guided missiles.

Clearing a path - mine clearing technology
Article Abstract:
The demand for mine clearing equipment is expected to continue with the lack of a practical alternative for the anti-tank mine. While mine clearing procedures have changed little, the trend around the world is now geared towards the adoption of multiple detection and multiple clearance technologies. Some of the technologies that have been adapted in mine detection now include the use of thermal imaging systems, ground penetrating radars and even dogs.
