The Air Force Academy graduated its first class consisting of 207 cadets 40 years ago on Jun 3, 1959. This historic Class of 1959 prospered in the succeeding years. Fifteen of them became general officers, with four of them retiring as four-star generals and one of them going on to become the Air Force Vice Chief of Staff. One graduate became the first in his class to shoot down an MiG, while another commanded the first Challenger shuttle under the space program. Many of the graduates have had successful second careers in the airline industry, real estate, investment counseling, management, education, medicine, law and the ministry.

From air to ground
Article Abstract:
The Allies, in the July 1943 invasion of Axis-held Sicily, made their first large-scale use of airborne forces such as paratroopers and glider-delivered soldiers but due to lack of training and inadequate communications the mission failed. As a result, the Army created small units of paratroopers called pathfinders who helped Allies to find the exact location of their landing by jumping in ahead of the main force, thus making it possible for the paratroopers and gliders to operate successfully.

The WASPs
Article Abstract:
Jacqueline Cochran and Nancy Love helped influence the decision to hire and train women pilots for noncombative roles during World War II. The women were not treated equally as their male counterparts, and it was only in 1977 that the contributions of the women were officially recognized and the women received what was due to them.
