Fluid-structure modelling in naval ship design
Article Abstract:
Research in naval hydrodynamics has historically focused on problems involved in solving the flow field around vessels while typically ignoring the structural implications. However, the emergence of flow field solvers, such as three-dimensional seakeeping, viscous flow, propulsor analysis and other related codes, has enabled the accurate computation of the pressures and forces acting on ship structures. This development and the widespread availability of quality structural analysis codes have facilitated the practical use of hydrodynamic codes in fluid structure coupling, applications of which are demonstrated in problems involving loading due to flow around rigid and non-rigid structures.
