The enemy next door
Article Abstract:
Drug control in South America might be the next order of battle for US military forces. The increasing links between organized terrorist organizations and drug traffickers are increasingly being monitored by US military analysts. US assistance to its neighbors, in the form of cash infusions, Drug Enforcement Agency advisors and military hardware, have been deemed by some quarters as ineffective in dealing with the drug menace. They are increasingly entertaining a role by US military forces in decisively dealing with the drug problem.

Grappling with demons
Article Abstract:
The US Pentagon's seventh annual report on the nation's Chemical and Biological Defense Program, presented to the US Congress in Mar 2000, warns of the inability of US forces to protect itself from chemical and biological weapons in the near term. The warning comes despite the infusion of over $1.1 billion on chemical and biological weapon defense programs from 2001 to 2005. It is estimated that a minimum of 10 years is needed to adequately prepare US forces for such a scenario.

Rolling thunder
Article Abstract:
The Army continues to plow ahead with its Crusader program despite considerable budget cuts that have altered the two-vehicle, 110-ton Crusader system. The Crusader remains the centerpiece of the service's artillery modernization efforts. The program has progressed satisfactorily, with software development problems that were encountered in 1998 having already been corrected. Ultimately, the Crusaders that enter service will be powered by lightweight gas turbine engines and will feature the original design of the gun system.
