Ground reconnaissance during OIF: a perspective from within 1st MarDiv
Article Abstract:
The employment of ground reconnaissance by the 1st Marine Division during Operation Iraqi Freedom followed a departure from doctrine through an adjustment of the battalion's training focus and application of recent table of equipment acquisitions allowing heavier units to focus on the division's primary task. In order to develop the capability of performing diverse tasks to counter the changing enemy threat, the Marine reconnaissance units require some adjustments in the Table of Organization and Equipment (T/O&E), Mission Essential Task List (METL) and mentality towards Marine air-ground task force (MAGTF) operations.

A reconnaissance platoon's perspective
Article Abstract:
The 1st Reconnaissance Battalion employed during Operation Iraqi Freedom performed missions usually reserved for light armor and infantry forces thus proving that Marine reconnaissance platoons could adapt to nontraditional employment. The change of mindset from locating, observing and reporting on the enemy to locating, closing with and destroying the enemy and the change in the rules of engagement were a major challenge and the lessons learnt emphasize the need to foster critical skills for shooting, moving and communicating and the need to maintain standoff while focusing on mobile reconnaissance.

Active reserve career opportunities
Article Abstract:
Promotions and career opportunities in the Active Reserve (AR) program are less compared to those available to the Active and Selected Marine Corps Reserve (SCMR) components. Thus, it is suggested that AR enlisted Marines should be allowed to compete for first sergeant and if selected should be offered augmentation to active duty.
