Article Abstract:
The US homeland defense mission has become a significant part in the service's day-to-day operations after the unexpected 9/11 attacks and is creating a set of new requirements. Some 70% of Air Force assets can serve homeland defense or overseas missions where reconnaissance and space assets monitor threats at home and abroad.

America's previous modern era wars were all fought someplace other than the United States. For two centuries, the country was protected by broad oceans and docile neighbors. The terrorists attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center towers on September 11 placed the national homeland on the front lines.

When aircraft get old
Article Abstract:
Support aircraft and aging fighters pose a challenge for the United States Air Force (USAF). The Air Force is making plans for scheduled procurement of new aircraft and simultaneously maintaining combat capabilities of older airplanes.
