Keeping up with Jones
Article Abstract:
Marine Corps Commandant Gen James Jones appears to have made it a mission to highlight the substantial contribution of his armed service branch to national security. One of the issues of great interest to Jones is the amount spent annually on defense, because he believes that a considerably larger, up-front investment in national security is required. Jones argued that the weapons, bases and infrastructure of all branches of the armed services must be modernized if they are to be able to effectively transform themselves in the manner they see fit to maintain US military superiority and readiness.

Service denial
Article Abstract:
Experienced recruiters for the armed services are having considerable difficulty selling four-year military commitments to the citizenry. Their problems have been compounded by outright opposition to military recruitment at high schools nationwide. The Defense Dept estimates that roughly 2,000 high schools are denying access to military recruiters from two or more armed service branches. Marine Corps Commandant Gen James Jones has singled out this problem as a potentially serious obstacle to military readiness.
