MV-22 and casualty evacuation: Can the aircraft perform the casualty evacuation mission effectively
Article Abstract:
The Marine Corps is replacing the aging fleet of CH-46E helicopters with the MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor helicopter, which provides many advantages to the assault support community due to increased speed, range and lift capabilities. But it cannot successfully perform the Marine Corps' mission of casualty evacuation (CasEvac) because its design reduces the effectiveness of the crew chief, it lacks defensive weapons, it has limited feasible landing zones (LZs) and problems with survivability.
