Ministers' signature moves FREMM frigate off the start line
Article Abstract:
The Defense Ministers of France and Italy have signed a declaration of intent paving the way for the award of a full development and construction contract for the Franco-Italian Frigate Europeene Multi-Mission (FREMM) program. The construction of 27 5,500-ton frigates valued at around EUR9 billion (US$12bn) is planned for the two navies and the frigates are likely to enter into service between 2010 and 2018.

Italian Navy studies design options for new LHD
Article Abstract:
The Italian Navy has disclosed the details of initial design studies for a new multipurpose landing helicopter dock (LHD) ship, which offers greater capability than the service's three existing vessels. One of the requirement specifications of the new LHD includes accommodation and facilities for an embarked military force of 750, comprising of a landing force of 600 and a command staff of 150.

Russia undertakes bilateral exercises
Article Abstract:
A ship of the Russian Federation Navy has undertaken a series of bilateral exercises with the navies of France, Italy, and the UK. The Project 971 Bars-class nuclear attack submarine (SSN) Vepr and the Project 1155.1 destroyer Admiral Chabonenko, participated in a bilateral submarine safety exercise with the French Navy SSN Emerande and the frigate Tourville in the northeast Atlantic.
