Modernized dragon: China aims for a leaner, rapid-reaction People's Liberation Army
Article Abstract:
The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) is the largest standing armed force in the world and even though it has downsized strength of 500,000 people since the late 1990s, its ground forces include 40 infantry divisions, nine armoured divisions and 12 armoured brigades. China's five-year plan seeks to develop an army that is leaner and more manoeuvrable with emphasis on command, control, communications, computers and intelligence (C4I) technology.
