Okinawa fight matched overwhelming firepower with desperate resistance
Article Abstract:
Operation Iceberg, which commenced on April 1, 1945, was a fight for American control of the Japanese island of Okinawa that would cut off sea lanes for fuel and raw materials from the south and provide a logistical base to support an assault on the home islands to the north. An account of this historic battle, where the determined air threat by the Japanese proved more formidable and lethal than the ground resistance, has been presented.
