The UN has passed new sanctons against the Taliban militia of Afghanistan. Pakistan is the Taliban's only ally and, as a result, finds itself in a difficult diplomatic position.

The widespread practice of opium production in Afghanisan has been greatly decreased by the Taliban, however the practice continues unabated in the areas controlled by the United Front forces. The country's opium trade is examined.

Pakistani-Afghan tensions increase

An increase in Taliban attacks across southern Afghanistan, an outbreak of border skirmishes between Afghan, and Pakistani government forces have pushed Kabul and Islamabad towards disagreement. The ransacking of PakistanEs embassy in Kabul on 8th July 2003 highlighted the weakening in relations between them.
