Portugal launches submarine programme

Portugal's Navy has launched a programme seeking proposals for three to four modern submarines to replace its three ageing ALBACORA class boat DAPHNE type built in France. Four shipyards have been given Request for Proposals, as well as two government commercial organizations. The service specified that the designs to be offered should be maximized for operations in Atlantic waters with the capability of using Sub-HARPOON depth-to-surface missiles. The Portugese Navy is to take bids until July 1, 1998 and announce a shortlist by late August or September 1998, with the winning design and contract award slated in 1999 and the first boat slated for service not later than 2004.
