Article Abstract:
The UK Defense Ministry's Defense Procurement Agency awarded contracts valued at about $1,600 million in 1999 to two competitive consortia respectively led by BAE Systems of the UK and Thomson CSF of France. The competing team are tasked with assessment phase of the Royal Navy's Future Aircraft Carrier (CVF) program that ends late in 2000 or early in 2001. The future carriers will enhance the UK's ability to mount joint operations worldwide. Each CVF will displace at least 40,000 tons and will be capable of operating up to 50 fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

Royal Navy DDG program gets underway at BAE, VT; United Defense buys Bofors Weapons Systems
Article Abstract:
BAE and VT have started work on the three Type 45 destroyers in batch 1 of a $8.880-billion program. United Defense plans on keeping Bofors based in Sweden and to produce life-cycle systems.

Trinational DDG reaches project-definition stage
Article Abstract:
International Joint Venture Co has received a new contract from the UK's Horizon Joint Project Office for project definition work on the Horizon air defense warship. The contract involves ship design, combat systems and propulsion systems selection. Currently, the British Ministry of Defense is assessing the communication systems and combat management systems for the warship. The planned acquisition of the Horizon air defence ships will provide the Navy with capable and effective escort ships.
