Russia's naval infantry: back into play?
Article Abstract:
Russia's naval infantry continues to play a unique and, possibly, increasingly significant role within that nation's armed forces structure. The Russian naval infantry contributed the equivalent of three brigades throughout the height of the conflict in Chechnya, where its value in three primary areas were clearly demonstrated. These areas are: its function as an operational ground force at a time when most of the regular army is demoralized and underfunded; its role as a force able to cope with new threats facing Russia, low-intensity conflicts and limited peace keeping/power projection missions; and its function as an effective tool of political control.
