Scoping out the new strike fighter
Article Abstract:
The Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) is designed around the requirement for a highly-effective state-of-the-art precision strike aircraft that will be sufficiently versatile to be relevant for the next 40 years of warfare, and inexpensive enough to be purchased and operated within the allocated budget. The JSF is slated to substitute the US Air Force A-10s and F-16s, the US Navy A-6 and several F-18 variants, the AV-8B Harrier IIs and F/A-18s of the US Marine Corps, and the Sea Harrier airplanes of the British Royal Navy. The two JSF development teams, Boeing with its X-32 and Lockheed Martin with its X-35, are vying for a total aircraft requirement of 2,852 planes.

Cohen: NMD test not fatal
Article Abstract:
A failure of a key test of the US National Missile Defense (NMD) program on Jul 8, 2000, will not result in the cancellation of the program, according to US Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen. Cohen said that the failure, while disappointing, will not affect his recommendation for the deployment of NMD to Pres Bill Clinton. The program, which has failed to hit its target twice in three tries, is set to make another attempt in Oct 2000.
