Sea-based missile defense unlikely
Article Abstract:
Defense Dept officials say that sea-based military assets are, at least for the meantime, not a part of a Pentagon plan for national missile defense (NMD). While ship-based interceptors and radars may one day add another protective layer to the missile defense system of systems, the development of such equipment would take too much time. The navy has been developing regional theater missile defense (TMD) systems that may one day be upgraded for NMD duties, but it is experiencing considerable problems with the TMD kinetic kill warhead.

Tiger team to study C-5 readiness
Article Abstract:
Air Force leaders have organized a tiger team that will attempt to find ways to improve the short- and long-term availability of the C-5 Galaxy transport and cargo aircraft. Their action was prompted by declines in the mission capability rate of this mammoth airlifter. The tiger team will split into two groups and deploy to 12 US bases during summer 2000 to develop a highly comprehensive and detailed picture of C-5 operations, maintenance and logistics.

USAF faces civilian employee shortage
Article Abstract:
The Air Force is confronting an imminent shortage of civilian workers in the near future, with more than 45% of its civilian employees being eligible for retirement in 2005. Civilian staff constitute 60% of the service's work force, according to Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) head Gen Lester L. Lyles. The AFMC has anticipated that it will need to hire 26,000 people between 2000 and 2007 to address the projected shortfall in civilian workers.
