Sensors and sensibility: Navies factor mammals into sonar use
Article Abstract:
The US-based Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) environmental campaign won a court order that forced the US Navy (USN) to stop using mid-frequency active sonars, which could potentially kill marine species during the 'Rim of the Pacific' exercise off the coast of Hawaii. However, following talks with NRDC, the USN has negotiated to have the ban lifted, promising to increase mitigation measures before sonars were switched on and during their use.
