South Africa confirms SANDF re-equipment program
Article Abstract:
The South African government approved, with modifications, a pending re- equipment program for the South African National Defense Force (SANDF) on Sep 17, 1999. It is estimated that the government will spend roughly US$3.55 billion for an initial package which includes fighter and trainer aircraft, patrol corvettes and patrol submarines. Options on a second package of fighter and trainer aircraft will cost an additional US$1.443 billion if they are exercised. However, the government has not given the SANDF what it originally requested because of cost restraints.

Decision time for SANDF procurement
Article Abstract:
The South African National Defense Force (SANDF) will be announcing key procurement decisions over the next few weeks. The decisions will undoubtedly have a major impact on the future structure of the SANDF, as well as on the overall security and foreign policy stance of South Africa. The likelihood of these decisions being implemented, however, rests on two factors, the SANDF's requirements and the real status of the South African defense budget.
