Southeast Asian crime syndicates turn to 'ice'
Article Abstract:
Ethnic Chinese organized crime groups have established illegal production centers of crystal methamphetamine ('ice') in Myanmar, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and some Pacific states to be smuggled to Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. The shift from China to these production and distribution routes is mainly due to strict antinarcotics activities in China, ineffective law enforcement in these countries due to corruption and a porous Philippine coastline which facilitates transit of 'ice'.

Shifting battle: Understanding the southern Thai insurgency
Article Abstract:
A relative decline in the insurgency in Thailand's majority-Muslim border provinces in late 2005 and early in 2006 has given Thai security chiefs a measure of hope. Despite hops the situation had been contained, violence in Thailand's southern border provinces has continued to escalate, with a worrying increase in high-profile shock calculated to widen the communal divide in the majority-Muslim region.
