$270 billion authorized for defense in FY99
Article Abstract:
The US's House National Security and the Senate Armed Services Committee have approved the $270 billion being proposed for national defense in Fiscal Year 1999. The authorized budget, however, lacks funding for new EW programs but finances several current EW programs beyond what has been requested by the administration. The EW programs which received fundings over the requested amount include the modifications to the EA-6B for better jamming capability, aircraft survivability equipment for improved aircraft survivability and the additional development of the ALQ-135 EW system to thwart the latest threats. The program for the stealthy DarkStar unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), however, was scrapped in favor for additional acquisition of Global Star UAV systems.

Multinational forum provides venue for competing IRCM systems
Article Abstract:
The US and the UK have been attracted by the recent AOC-sponsored multinational forum that tackles countermeasures against manportable infrared guidance missile systems. The effort, which was spurred by certain instances experienced during Operation Desert Storm and of Soviet forces in Afghanistan, focuses on the Sanders Advanced Tactical Infrared Countermeasures (ATIRCM) and on the US/UK Directional Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM). The programs for the two countermeasures technologies involve the integration of systems that allow the coordinated activation of related missile-warning, flare and chaff systems.
