The U.S. defense budget: choices for the next president
Article Abstract:
The next US president will be faced with the issue of the defense budget for the coming years. Despite the federal budget surplus, there are budgetary pressures which will prevent the Pentagon from getting any increases which it will ask for. The defense budget for FY2000 is $280 billion, an amount described by Republicans as inadequate. The Pentagon is inclined to assume that the annual real defense budget will be $300 to $310 billion in constant 2000 dollars for the next decade.
