Issues concerning the rise of the United Wa State Army's involvement in narcotics trafficking, arms trading and ethnic resettlement in Myanmar are examined. Interest in control of lucrative trade routes is reflected in the pattern of settlement in valleys along the borders with Thailand and Laos.
