USN combines contracted underwater salvage
Article Abstract:
Phoenix International Inc has been awarded a five-year contract to oversee the systems integration of the US Navy's (USN) new submarine search and rescue (SAR) equipment and will take on the operation and maintenance of the service. The USN's SAR and recovery operations will be combined under one banner. Also, the Virginia-based company will operate sonar search and Remotely Operated Vehicles. These will be run in conjunction with the Submarine Rescue and Diving Recompression System, which are presently being developed.

Ingalls waits for LHD 8
Article Abstract:
Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding of Pascagoula, MS, has yet to obtain the go ahead to build the eighth Wasp-class (LHD) assault ship. The eighth LHD has a funding of $50 million in the Fiscal Year 1999 budget. The company has built or is building all seven of the LHD ships. The US Navy and US Marine Corps envision a fleet of 36 assault ships/transport docks in line with their expeditionary force planning.
