A computer plan runs into trouble
Article Abstract:
The purpose of the Advanced Computing Environment (ACE), a consortium of computer manufacturers and software publishers, is to remake the industry by providing a choice of compatible systems based on MIPS Computer Systems' microprocessors or IBM-compatible chips from Intel. But the consortium has problems. ACE, in response to the needs and demands of its members, may wind up promoting as many as six operating systems that are only partly compatible. This circumstance undermines ACE's original aim of a uniform platform to encourage software development. Sun Microsystems Inc, a rival, meanwhile announces Solaris, an operating system so attractive that Compaq Computer Corp, a member of ACE, is considering using it. Worst of all, MIPS Computer Systems appears to be in financial trouble, losing both money and personnel.

A network of networks that keeps scientists plugged in
Article Abstract:
Scientists all over the world are using the Internet computer network to collaborate on large projects. The Internet is a network of networks that was created by the Pentagon's Advanced Projects Research Agency in the 1960s and has since expanded to include 90 countries. The network allows scientists to send electronic mail, share research results and control experiments around the globe. Private computer networks can be linked to the Internet by large industrial corporations. Geneticists from Johns Hopkins University are using the Internet to collect information on the human genome, while high-energy physics researchers in Los Angeles run experiments on an atom smasher in Switzerland via Internet.
