Small software maker with a loud voice
Article Abstract:
Banyan Systems Inc, Westboro, MA, is moving to take market share from its rival, Novell Inc. Banyan, which currently has 7.5 percent of the $1.2 billion market for network software, aims to increase its marketing efforts by doubling the number of its vendors. Some industry observers believe that Novell, which controls 60 percent of the market, now is too strong to attack. Novell's NetWare is being used by large, influential customers such as Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Digital Equipment Corp. Other analysts say that Banyan was ahead of its time, and they think that Banyan, led by its optimistic president and CEO, David C. Mahoney, will do well. Mahoney himself says he plans to take his company public in 1992 as a way to increase credibility with corporate customers. Banyan does not need cash, says Mahoney, but corporate customers tend to be wary of private companies.

'What if ... ' software for manufacturers
Article Abstract:
Carp Systems International's Advanced Planning System, a computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) service and software system that costs between $150,000 and $1 million, is a business planning system that helps manufacturers make fast 'what if' calculations to plan their operations if their businesses go through changes. Carp's engineers take a client's manufacturing resources planning (MRP II) software and put the data on an IBM or HP workstation . The Carp software searches out data using an algorithm, and then calculates the effect of changes in certain variables. Carp is in the process of making cooperative agreements with MRP II software manufacturers. Carp would license its software to these companies, and the companies would, in turn, make the product available to buyers of their MRP programs.
