A new-age mailbox on your desk
Article Abstract:
People from all walks of life are increasingly using public electronic mail (E-mail) services offered by such online information service providers as Compuserve, Genie and America Online to exchange personal communications, much as people used to carry on a personal correspondence through letters. Some online services also provide E-mail gateways to the Internet, allowing customers to exchange messages with about 12 million people throughout the world. MCI Mail is another widely used public E-mail service. Oregon author Alice E. McLerran, for example, chats daily via E-mail with her world-wide extended 'family,' some members of which are in fact, and not merely in fiction, related to her. Northwestern Univ emeritus Prof Nat Raskin prefers E-mail over all other forms of correspondence for the way it lends itself to serial exchanges and deliberate composition. Homebound senior citizens also find it exciting to get out and about via E-mail. Some users delight in disguising their true identities in their messages, while others manage to delude themselves concerning the personal attributes of their correspondents, resulting in unpleasant surprises when they meet in person.
