An impressive line from Lexmark breaks old ground: a solid choice for those tricky forms and envelopes
Article Abstract:
Computer printer vendor and former IBM division Lexmark International introduces an upgraded IBM Wheelwriter line of word-processing electric typewriters to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the typewriter's invention and the 60th anniversary of IBM's first machine. Electric typewriters remain useful in the era of advanced laser printers and word-processing microcomputers for such tasks as typing forms and labels. They are also rugged and very easy to use and install. The eight new Wheelwriters range from the $695 model 1000 for educational and home use to the $1,845 model 7000, which offers 172Kbytes of memory and phone number and calculator functions, for office professionals. Users can store several simple business forms, protected by battery backup, in the memory models. They also offer spelling checkers for up to 50,000 words and automatic correction spanning the last 4Kbytes of text.

H-P's new laser: smaller, cheaper but not faster
Article Abstract:
HP's $849 Laserjet 4L personal laser printer for microcomputers running DOS and Windows performs better than the popular Laserjet IIP and could very well make dot-matrix printers obsolete. The 4L is also half the size of other Laserjet models and weighs less than half their weight, at 15.5 pounds. Because it has reduced the price of laser printers to just a little above dot-matrix printers, HP will likely be able to convince business users to invest in the 4L as a personal printer. The 4L only has a single button on its control panel; status feedback is available to users through software. With its Economode feature, the 4L uses half the toner used in regular mode and extends the print cartridge's life. One drawback is speed; it runs at the same speed as the IIP at four pages per minute but print quality is much better.
