World political changes caused former Soviet, German, and Yugoslavian athletes to feel they were without a country in the 1992 Winter Olympics. Athletes from liberated countries were proud to publicly display their nationalistic feelings despite training problems.

Canadian Myriam Bedard won the bronze medal in the biathlon at the 1992 Winter Olympics. Bedard, who hails from Quebec, is the first North American to win a medal in the biathlon, a sport which combines cross-country skiing and target shooting.
