Industry analysts said that Toronto, Ont.-based Canada Life Financial Corp. wants to acquire United Kingdom's Abbey Life Group PLC for about $2.4 billion. Industry analysts said that Canada Life, which went public last year, may not be able to convince investors that the acquistion is feasible.

Royal boosts service fees

Montreal, Que.-based Royal Bank of Canada has announced that it will impose a $25 fee for bounced checks. Royal Bank, which will cut some banking fees while increasing others, has not changed its fees structure since 1995.
