Advice on a disk: the doctor is really in
Article Abstract:
Doctor Schueler's Home Medical Advisor, $69.95, is medical-advice software from Pixel Perfect Inc (Merritt Island, FL). The database used in the program resulted from a collaborative effort that involved more than 40 doctors. Home Medical Advisor includes information in the following categories: symptoms; diseases; injuries; poisons; tests; drugs; and health and diet. The program is not a substitute for medical care, but it can help a user to become a well-informed consumer of medical care. Home Medical Advisor requires an IBM-or-compatible microcomputer with 512Kbytes of system memory and a hard drive. A program called Addressmate, $99.95, from Addressmate (El Cerrito, CA), is also described. Addressmate, which works with most popular word-processing and database programs, and with most Hewlett-Packard Co Laserjet printers and compatibles, addresses envelopes in such a way that labels are not obviously computer-generated. Such labels function as a signal to some recipients that mail can be thrown away unopened. A book titled 'Voodoo DOS. Tips and Tricks With an Attitude,' by Kay Yarborough Nelson (Ventana Press; $19.95), is recommended.

Of facts and factoids
Article Abstract:
Writer's Dreamtools, $149 for a full set and $89 for a student set, from Slippery Disks (Los Angeles, CA) consists of five HyperCard stacks providing interesting and useful organized collections of facts. The product targets both student and professional writers. There are two versions: the full set together with HyperCard 2.1, which requires 4.4 Mbytes on a hard disk; and a student version that leaves out slang and cliche stacks, and requires only 2.9 Mbytes. Two of the stacks are new additions to Dreamtools: one is a Stack of Lists; and the other is a Stack of Decades. The former includes 600 lists of people, places and things. The latter provides potentially useful information about every decade back to 1650. Dreamtools disks can be purchased separately, without HyperCard or a manual, for $35, or for $49 for the Stack of Lists.
