Aliens at home: Estonia's Russians feel second-class
Article Abstract:
Many of the 500,000 ethnic Russians who live in the now independent state of Estonia feel discriminated against. Ethnic Russians, even those who were born in Estonia, are now classified as aliens and do not have the same rights as Estonians. Possible effects of the laws are examined.

Many Russians observing the 50th anniversary of VE-Day claimed that the Soviet Union played the key role in World War II, in which about 27 million Soviet soldiers died. Many Western leaders at the ceremonies expressed displeasure over the military situation in Chechnya.

An estimated 10% of former Soviets are alcoholics, and the government does little to treat the disease. Drunks have become more of a social problem since efforts to make Russia more democratic have stalled. Drinking has long been a part of the Russian culture.
