Apple-I.B.M. pact is said to be near
Article Abstract:
Apple Computer Inc and IBM Corp are expected to announce a cooperative agreement that would combine the computer companies' strengths. Apple would have an opportunity to exploit the office environment in large corporations, where IBM machines now dominate, and IBM would get software technology to make its machines easier to use, which is an area in which Apple excels. The alliance could mean that computers made by the two companies in the future would run the same software, though it is not expected that IBM microcomputers and Apple's Macintoshes would run the same programs. Part of the agreement is expected to specify Apple's use of IBM RS/6000 microprocessors in a product line. Another portion relates to Apple and IBM's cooperation in the development of a new operating system, code named 'Pink.'

Article Abstract:
Executives of Apple Computer Inc and IBM are reported to be discussing a technology alliance between the two companies. Part of the negotiations are thought to be concentrating on IBM's desire to license, and perhaps even assist in the development of, basic software for a new Apple product line intended to succeed the company's Macintosh microcomputers. Also thought to be on the agenda is whether Apple will use an IBM microprocessor in future products. Analysts believe that any alliance between the two long-time adversaries would have far-reaching repercussions throughout the computer industry.
