As Uses Grow, Tiny Materials' Safety Is Hard to Pin Down
Article Abstract:
Investors and makers of public policy are realizing that ascertaining potential health and environmental hazards and effects of nanotechnology may well take many years. Research on nanotubes, at DuPont, found that nanotubes injected into rats tended to clump in the lungs, leading to difficulty breathing and ultimately to death by suffocation for fifteen percent of the rats. Research has found signs that cells that break down foreign particles in the lungs of rats have difficulty detecting and coping with nanoparticles, as compared with the larger particles studied by pollution researchers. Moreover, nanoparticles put in the nose can move to the brain, and can alter their shape as they leave liquid and enter air, complicating research on their potential environmental impact. Researchers say it will be at least ten years before they can give answers on potential health and environmental toxicological effects of nanotechnology.
