Australian deco, an art apart
Article Abstract:
Australia's Museum of Sydney presented an art deco exhibition that opened on June 12, 1999. The exhibition mostly consisted of photographs of buildings and designs completed in the 1920s and 1930s, when art deco began. It concentrated on Australian interpretations of the art movement. Art deco was a style of artistic embellishments for functional items. The exhibition included photographs of Australian landmarks such as Sydney's Transport House and the Archibald Fountain.

The 1999 Moet et Chandon Contemporary Art Fellowship was awarded to New York-based painter Kathy Temin for her piece 'Troubled Times,' which is reminiscent of the artwork on the television cartoon 'South Park.' She won a cash prize of $50,000 and a year of working as an artist at Dom Perignon's Abbey of Hautvillers in the Champagne district of France.
