The Italian constitutional court's decision to rescind a law that allows prime ministers immunity from prosecution may well be the beginning of bad times for Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi who has lurched from one crisis to another. The country's coalition is slowly disintegrating due to strikes by various unions and the Parmalat scandal that threatens to derail the Italian economy.

Southern Italy's old Mezzogiorno is one of Europe's most impoverished regions, where 40 years of government aid and investment have had little impact. This north-south income divide will continue to deepen unless there is a commitment from Italy's federal government to invest economically in the south and offer incentives for northern businesses to do the same.
