Ballard powers up for production
Article Abstract:
Ballard Power Systems Inc., a Burnaby, British Columbia-based company that is developing pollution-free fuel cells intended for vehicles and stationary power facilities, is moving to the commercial phase from the entrepreneurial, R&D stage. Over the succeeding six years, the company hopes to actually fabricate and market its first products. Ballard Power, which recorded C$24.2 million in revenue in 1997, will seek facilities in Vancouver, British Columbia, where fuel cells will be manufactured. In 1998, the company will hire an additional of around 150 workers to boost Ballard Power's marketing efforts in areas that include Japan, Germany and the US.

U.S. giant plays it cool on Loewen
Article Abstract:
Houston, TX-based Service Corp. International (SCI), the world's biggest funeral services company, would not rule out another takeover bid for Loewen Group Inc., a Burnaby, British Columbia-based funeral services firm. But SCI President William Heiligbrodt said that his enthusiasm for Loewen has considerably decrease ever since SCI abandoned its US$45 a share hostile bid in January 1997. Heiligbrodt cited among other reasons as the millions of dollars Loewen spent to ward off SCI's bid, a C$450-million issue of shares at $33 each in May 1997, Loewen's expensive cost structure and Loewen's purchase of many small cemeteries.
