Canada's Marnie McBean and Kathleen Heddle won the gold medals for pairs rowing in the 1992 Olympics. Coaches say the team won because of their intensity and dedication to their sport. Teammate Silken Laumann made a dramatic comeback from a serious accident and placed third in the singles race.

Spain's summer sensation

The 1992 Olympics began in Barcelona, Spain amid much fanfare. Some 65,000 spectators viewed the opening ceremonies whose features included giant motorized figures, performances by operatic tenors Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras and dancing senoritas.

Barcelona showed its typical warmth and congeniality during the 1992 Olympics. Visitors enjoyed the renovated beaches and artificial waterfalls in spite of intense heat. The colorful city swarmed with political and personal demonstrations.
