Bay cities dropped promotions for lower sales
Article Abstract:
The Bay department store chain, based in Toronto in Ontario, Canada, attributed its lower sales result in fall-1998, to a decline in multiple discount promotions, which reduced up to 75% of purchase prices. Although the discontinuation of the promotions were implemented in August 1998, in order to boost the chain's earnings, many customers enjoyed the privelege of using the many-tiered discounts, which included scratch and save cards, No-GST specials, and regular markdowns, according to William Fields, president of Bay's parent firm, Hudson's Bay Co. The Bay department store chain also discontinued the distribution in 1998, of its Bay Card dollars, which offered $5 coupons off in-store purchases to store credit card holders.
