Big show amid computer industry chaos
Article Abstract:
Comdex, the largest US computer show, opens on Monday, Oct 21, 1991, amid chaotic conditions in the computer and software publishing industries. Technological advances have combined with slowed economic conditions to create turmoil. Companies have responded by cutting prices, forming alliances and introducing new products. IBM, a hardware company, plans a software introduction, betting that its OS/2 operating system can successfully compete against Microsoft Corp's Windows. Apple, which is best known for its user-friendly operating system software, will introduce notebook computers as well as other new hardware products. Pen-based computers are expected to be an especially important part of this year's Comdex show, with various companies introducing pen-based machines and software.

In Silicon Valley, raised eyebrows
Article Abstract:
Silicon Valley executives are skeptical about the appointment of Louis V. Gerstner Jr, a computer industry outsider, as the new chairman and CEO of IBM. Unlike Wall Street analysts who demand from IBM a financial turnaround, these computer industry executives think that what is needed is for a marketing oriented organization such as IBM to transform into a technology-driven company that has the ability to constantly reinvent itself. IBM's corporate culture, which focuses on marketing, is seen as unable to keep pace with the fundamental laws of modern computing. And with the advent of diverse technological changes such as high-speed data networks and mobile computing, the task of turning IBM around may be too daunting for one person.
