The practice of borrowing money to invest in the stock market has become widespread since the Commonwealth's margin lending initiative, but it has attracted the scrutiny of the Taxation Office. A range of tax deductions claimed by borrowers have been ruled out, and the uncertainty surrounding margin lending has caused investors to avoid these investments until the tax office clarifies its rules.
