The United Nations Security Council extended its peacekeeping mandate in Haiti for four months while cutting its force size to 1,000 troops and 250 police. This is expected to be the last extension. The peacekeeping mission is controversial in Haiti and at the United Nations.

Buying time: the Canadians have landed for a perilous Haiti mission
Article Abstract:
Canada promised to send 750 troups to extend UN military presence in Haiti following the Feb 19, 1996, withdraw of American troops. Because Parliment was not in session, the decision was made with little debate. Canada has committed $24 million to the effort.
